Pyrlafin Information

Pyrlafin: (pearl-ah-fin)

Where Do They Live?

Pyrlafins live on the continent of Alimare, a land mass across the sea due west of Equestria. This mystical land has been cut off from the rest of the world by its tyrannical ruler, Emperor Bloodfang, after the fall of its benevolent empress.

Habitat

Pyrlafin ponies are habitants of Marelantis, a coastal city found in the Gleaming Isles off Alimare's southern coast. Nearly 1/3 or Marelantis is located under water, and there are numerous underwater cities and towns found throughout the Isles. These cities are protected by magic air bubbles which keep water out, and yet still allow ponies to enter in without puncturing them. Pyrlafins have also founded and maintain numerous outposts and small towns along Alimare's waterways and coastlines. They are rarely seen anywhere near Alimare's interior provinces and cities, preferring, instead, to offer their goods and services on the continent's edges.

Aquatic Details

Pyrlafins are excellent swimmers and spend a great deal of their time in the water. However, if they need to be on land, they may do so for a maximum of 3 days before they must find water and at least sprinkles themselves with it. Being aquatic ponies, and having sensitive fins that do dry out, water is a must for them. Any Pyrlafin that lives permanently on land has a pool of water nearby that they regularly visit.

These ponies are unique because they possess four lungs! The two main lungs breathe in oxygen while a Pyrlafin is on land, and the other two fall dormant. The second pair of lungs, known as "water lungs" among Pyrlafins, allow the pony to breathe in water, which filters out oxygen before the lung forces the water back out. This action allows Pyrlafins to effectively "breathe" underwater.

Pyrlafins also have a "third eyelid," which is simply a clear, waterproof lid that comes over the eye when Pyrlafins are in the water. This lid is only activated while underwater. They also have a protective slit inside their nostrils which close to keep out water while submerged.

Diet

Pyrlafins are omnivores. Their diet heavily consists of vegetation (fruits, vegetables, grains, etc.), but about 10% of their diet involves of meat. Their main source of protein comes from fisheries that they raise and maintain. They are only one of two pony species in Alimare that actively eat meat, and crave it when their bodies become too deficient of iron.

Trade and Goods

By living on the coast, the Pyrlafin ponies of Marelantis have exotic goods with which to trade with their neighbors. They specialize in growing aquatic plants, fruits, and vegetables, and are renowned for their skills in making pearl and shell jewelry.

Pearls

Legend states that the Pyrlafin ponies were created when a sea serpent seduced a unicorn into the sea and stole its magic. When the serpent tried to use its new power, it cursed itself and it was transformed into an mollusk. It is said that the stolen magic created the first Pyrlafins out of the pearl the mollusk produced.

Every Pyrlafin since magically forms pearls on their bodies as they grow. All foals are born without them, but over time, they begin to form their very own. Pyrlafins shed their pearls, as they know they will form new ones, and use them in their jewelry. Pearls on the body are usually the same color, but in extremely rare instances, pearls are mismatched.

Pyrlafin hooves and - horns, if they are unicorns - are made of pearl as well, and are usually the same color of pearl that make up those on their bodies.

Bubble Pets

All Pyrlafin foals receive a so-called "Bubble Pet" when they are just days old. Foals are loosed into the waves, and they receive their pet when it is attracted to them. These pets can vary between small creatrures like sea slugs, crabs, and sea stars, to larger animals like fish, sea snakes, and jellyfish. Rarer still are seals, sea lions, mini sharks, dolphins, and whales. These pets live with their Pyrlafin for life, and the two are strongly connected. When out of the water, Pyrlafin pets are protected by magical bubbles that keep them nice and wet.

Common:
Sea slug, crab (any variety), sea star, small fish (fresh or freshwater), jellyfish, eels, clam, oyster, shrimp, sea horse
Uncommon:
Ray (of any kind), sea snake (crates), sea bird (protected while underwater with same air bubbles that protect cities), large fish (fresh or saltwater), octopus, squid, otter, newt, salamander, platypus
Rare:
(All of these animals come in mini form and can be any species or variety) Shark, dolphin, whale, seal, walrus, sea lion, polar bear, alligator, crocodile, hippopotamus
Epic: Sea serpent, any other "mythological" sea animal

:bulletblue: If you're not sure about a Bubble Pet, feel free to ask me about it! There are simply too many aquatic creatures in the world, and it's hard to list them all. XD :bulletblue:

Body Builds and Size

Pyrlafins range in size from small, to tall. Genetics play a role, of course, in the size of each individual pony. Pyrlafin nobles tend to be taller than their common-class neighbors.

Body types can be only Earth or Unicorn. There is no rarity between the two. There are NO Pegasus types.

Deep-sea Pyralfins, called Abyssals, differ from their light-dwelling kin. You can find information on them here: Abyssal Pyrlafin Traits

Caste System

The Pyralfin caste system consists of three class tiers: Noble, Common, and Surf. The Noble class own most of Pyrlafin lands, and live a life of luxury. They dwell in estates made out of enormous shells and rarely venture far from their homes. The Common class live under the care of a Noble, and run businesses within their province. They are most likely to leave home to trade in outposts and interact with their land-dwelling neighbors. The Surf class of Pyrlafins tend to the land their Noble owns. They almost never leave the land, and are responsible for the well-being of their Noble's estate. Despite being on the lowest end of the caste system, Surfs are in no way disrespected by their betters. Pyrlafins pride themselves in being fair to all who live in their lands.

Breeding

Pyrlafins generally breed with other Pyrlafins, simply because of their isolated homes and their need to be near water. This does not mean that breeding between other ponies doesn't happen! Half-breed Pyrlafins were, at one point, far more common than they presently are, but marriages and pairings between the aquatic ponies and other ponies still occurs.

Pyrlafins aren't known for choosing life-long partners (but some do), and they usually enjoy rearing families. If a Pyrlafin breeds with a non-Pyrlafin pony, different traits may result from the pairing. Half-breeds may also have a more difficult time staying underwater, as some may be born with only one pair of lungs (which will always be air-breathing in design) instead of four.
